Torrential rain hits South London as thunder and lightning bring end to heatwave

The heavens have opened in South London as the storm we’ve all been waiting for has finally hit.

Parts of South London have reported heavy downpours, including Croydon and Wandsworth.

The sky has turned an ominous grey as thunder and lightning have already started in some areas, including Bromley in South East London.

There have also been reports of flooding in some parts of Croydon and two major motorways – the M25 and M23 have been closed from flooding.

It comes after London and a lot of the UK has experienced an intense heatwave since last Friday.

Temperatures rose up to 36C on Friday (August 7) and have not dipped below 30C since.

Many Londoners have been hoping for a storm so that the weather cools down a bit.
