New map shows how many active coronavirus cases there are in each London borough

More than 1,000 people living in London are believed to currently have coronavirus, data shows.

According to figures published by the COVID-19 Symptom Study app, there are an estimated 29,000 active cases of Covid-19 in the whole country.

According to the app, which estimates the total number of symptomatic cases based on people registering themselves as infected on the platform, the borough with the most active cases is Newham, with 97 per 100,000 people.

Tower Hamlets and Haringey are not too far behind, with 83.3 and 75.7 cases per 100,000 people respectively.

The borough with the lowest number of cases, according to the data, is Havering with 38.5.

Data for Barking and Dagenham and the City of London was not available as of Monday (September 7).

Because the app just focuses on symptomatic cases, the data does not show the total number of cases which is likely to be far higher, as it cannot account for people who have no symptoms so have no idea they have the illness.

There is a growing body of scientific research to suggest that a large body of people who catch the virus remain asymptomatic.
