London’s most dangerous boroughs in 2020 have been named

Crime levels in London have taken somewhat a back seat in 2020 with the Covid-19 pandemic and the infection levels in the capital becoming the dominant issue.

Although competing for headlines in 2020, Covid and crime are actually heavily interlocked in London.

Analysis has revealed that due to the pandemic, levels of crime have fallen when compared with 2019 in a rather dramatic way.

In the most up to date crime figures available from the Metropolitan Police covering January to November 2020, there were 730,206 registered crimes in London.

Over the same period in 2019 there was 846,268 crimes registered by the police, a difference of 116,062.

Theft and handling was the leading crime in the capital this year with 261,398 instances and in 2019 the levels were much higher at 350,480.

Interestingly though violence against a person in both 2020 and 2019 were at similar levels, with the former seeing 253,647 registered crimes and the later 251,473.

The explanation for lower levels of crime this year can be attributed to a number of factors including the two lockdowns, a fall in tourist and visitor numbers, and restrictions placed around nightlife throughout the year.

Westminster topped the list of most crimes in London and this is despite the numbers of tourists falling in what is seen as one of the main tourist borough hubs in the capital.

In total there were 45,090 crimes in Westminster and the rate of crime per 1,000 population was 187.80, also the highest in the capital.

Croydon has the second highest numbers of crime with 30,786 registered by the Met Police, however in terms of the number of crimes per person it has the 16th highest crime rate.

A high number of crimes does not necessarily mean a high crime rate so it’s important both are considered when looking at London’s crime figures for 2020.
